Men & IC 08/21/2009
It is so easy to become narrow-minded when discussing IC from a women's perspective, even though I have always know that children and men can get IC too. Men struggle with the same issues as women when it comes to IC: long periods of many years without a definitive diagnosis; being told that they have a similar condition; intense pain in their bladders and sexual reproductive organs; shame or embarassment associated with a disease in this part of their bodies. I have also read (and heard) that men might have a more difficult road to diagnosis and acceptance as most urologists still consider IC to be a "woman's disease", which seems outlandish considering there have been numerous studies which prove that men can also get IC. Similar studies have also shown that men with IC can benefit from the same IC drugs as women. I am going to strive to become more gender neutral when dealing with IC and I will continue to provide products, studies, and information relating to all aspects of IC, for both women and men. Someday all people with IC will have a unified voice full of support and equal coverage of the disease. I hope that that day comes sooner rather than later.
