Like most women with IC, I have an increase in pain and inflammation with my IC symptoms during ovulation.  Doctors are continuing to research the effect that hormones play on IC.  When my IC symptoms were severe I actually looked forwarded to menstruating as that was the only time out of the month that my IC went into "remission" and I felt almost normal.

My biggest complaint now is pain and inflammation (pain and inflammation are always bosom buddies in the human body when something is wrong) in the vulva during ovulation.  A few years ago the pain and inflammation was so intense that wearing clothing was unbearable.  Unfortunately I had to go to work regardless but oftentimes had to leave work due to the pain and discomfort that I felt during ovulation.  This pain and inflammation during ovulation (when estrogen levels drop while progesteron levels surge) were lessened to tolerable levels when I was able to get acupuncture treatments done once a week (especially the week prior to ovulation).  Acupuncture is effective in preventing inflammation as well as helping in pain management.  If you are interested in working with acupuncturist, ask them about herbs which they can prescribe (usually drunk as a tea) to help with inflammation.  As always, do not take herbs of any kind unless you are working with a trusted doctor and/or licensed acupuncturist/Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor.

I will end this blog entry by saying that I understand how uncomfortable ovulation pain can be.  Now, I'm off to brew some water for my herbal tea....

There are many articles about the positive affects that acupuncture has on IC symptoms.  I can attest to the healing affects that acupuncture has had on my IC.  In fact I noticed a difference after my very first acupuncture treatment...it seemed like a cooling/calming sensation was occurring in my pelvic area during treatment, while after the treatment as I was walking around the grocery store shopping for dinner ingredients, a feeling of euphoria overcame me and my feet felt as if I was walking on clouds.  That night I slept better than I had in years and there was definitely a decrease in the urinary frequency over the next week or so.  My acupuncturist wanted me to get acupuncture treatments done once a week at the beginning as he said my first chakra was very weak.  Unfortunately I was unable to get that many treatments done due to finances, but getting acupuncture done 1-2 times a month over the past two years has significantly improved my IC pain, urinary frequency, IBS symptoms, etc.

The acupuncturist that I go to is both a certified holistic doctor as well as a trained in China Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor, so in addition to the acupuncture treatments, I have also used various Chinese herbals and he is the doctor that introduced me to Yin Care douches (one of my favorites).  TCM doctors treat IC as they do any "dis-ease" by looking at the entire picture of the person's health including any stressors, emotional and physical ailments, and through taking a pulse at the start of every treatment.  I probably would never have considered acupuncture treatments if I had never been diagnosed with IC, but now I am very thankful for this very ancient healing technique!
