Choosing the IC treatment protocol that is best for your IC can be a long journey. Most of us with IC have additional diseases or conditions which means there might be contraindications with IC medications, medication side affects, or pressure from doctors, family and friends, or other IC patients that the treatment plan/medication that works for them MUST work for you as well. It can be confusing and tricky to manuever through all of the information posted on IC websites, blogs, and to read through the information about IC treatments provided to you by your physician. Although all of us with IC experience different levels of pain and symptoms, it does seem that treating IC is also an individual experience, which adds to the despair and loneliness that having the IC already entails. Personally, I tried numerous prescription medications to treat my IC, but found that the side effects were a nightmare, and I actually felt worse while taking them (which, considering my pain level and symptoms seems hard to believe looking back), so I ultimately had success with the IC diet and Traditional Chinese medicine herbs, acupuncture, all while having my urine and bowels tested for worms, bacteria, acidity, etc. It took four years for my IC to go into remission, re-balance, for my health to return (whatever you want to label it I am doing so much better now). But it was a long, painful, emotional, and heartbreaking journey. Know that it is common for all of us with IC to have depressing and debilitating moments while trying to find the best treatments for our IC. Stay the course, do as much research as you can into all treatments (traditional or holistic) and make sure that your support group is in place, and know that all of us with IC understand your pain and wish you the best on your healing journey.
